La decisione giunge dopo una lunga campagna sulle donazioni di sangue da parte di gruppi per i diritti Lgbt+ e alcuni parlamentari, che ritengono la normativa statunitense ingiusta e discriminatoria dal momento che a uomini e donne eterosessuali non è richiesto alcun periodo previo di astinenza.
Glaad ha accolto con favore la decisione di Food and Drug Administration ma ha detto che continuerà a impegnarsi affinché il periodo di attesa venga revocato del tutto.
Le regole sulle donazioni di sangue da parte di uomini gay e bisessuali differiscono in tutto il mondo. Gran Bretagna e Canada richiedono che gli uomini gay e bisessuali si astengano da rapporti sessuali per tre mesi prima di donare. In Austria, Germania, Ungheria, ad esempio, sono richiesti 12 mesi, mentre il periodo di attesa è di cinque anni a Taiwan.
Cina, Filippine, Grecia, Libano, Singapore, Slovenia sono, invece, alcuni dei Paesi che vietano del tutto a maschi che hanno rapporti sessuali con maschi di donare sangue. Nessun limite temporale, invece, in Paesi , ad esempio, come Argentina, Polonia, Russia, Spagna, Italia, dove, però, nonostante il decreto Veronesi del 2001 (che impone comunque un questionario in cui si deve notificare se si sono avuti comportamenti a rischio negli ultimi quattro mesi a prescindere dal fatto se si è eterosessuali, omosessuali o bisessuali), la donazione di sangue da parte di uomini gay è spesso a discrezione del centro trasfusionale.
A seguito dell’epidemia da Hiv/Aids gli Stati Uniti avevano imposto nel 1983 un divieto totale di donare sangue a uomini gay e bisessuali. Divieto poi cancellato nel 2015 con l’introduzione di un periodo di attesa di 12 mesi.
Ma nelle ultime settimane Fda ha subito pressioni da parte di vari parlamentari, tra cui la deputata Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez e la senatrice Elizabeth Warren, che ha definito le restrizioni «stigmatizzanti» e «discriminatorie».
Dopo aver notificato in marzo che il numero di donazioni di sangue «è drasticamente ridotto» a causa della presente crisi sanitaria, Fda ha ieri dichiarato che «le nuove misure per donatori gay e bisessuali rimarranno in vigore anche dopo la fine della pandemia. Mantenere un adeguato apporto di sangue – ha concluso l’agenzia federale – è vitale per la salute pubblica».
