Martedì 15 gennaio l’Assemblea e il Senato dello Stato di New York hanno votato a larghissima maggioranza (rispettivamente 100 sì, 40 no; 42 sì, 19 no) la messa al bando delle terapie di conversione di minori omosessuali. Esercitata da terapeuti e professionisti, ma anche da guide spirituali e da ministri di culto, la pratica è diffusa negli ambienti religiosi statunitensi più conservatori.
New York diventa così il 15° Stato Usa (oltre alla capitale Washington) a rendere illegale la conversion therapy. Nel solo 2018 ad adottare tale misura normativa erano stati Washington, Maryland, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Delaware.
La legge sarà presto firmata dal governatore Andrew Cuomo, che ha dichiarato: «La cosiddetta terapia di conversione Lgbtq è una pratica fraudolenta che ha arrecato danni a troppi giovani: New York è stata in prima linea nel proteggere i diritti Lgbtq per decenni e quando i repubblicani al Senato hanno rifiutato di vietare la terapia di conversione, abbiamo agito per impedirne la copertura da parte della compagnie di assicurazione.
Con l’odierna approvazione di questa legge, New York sta inviando un chiaro messaggio secondo cui nessuno dovrebbe essere torturato per ciò che è. Il mio plauso al legislatore per aver messo definitivamente al bando la terapia di conversione e protetto i giovani Lgbtq».
Sempre il 15 gennaio il Parlamento newyorkese ha infine approvato il Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (Genda), che accorda particolari tutele alle persone transgender in ambito lavorativo e assistenziale riconoscendo loro lo status di classe protetta.
