A dare notizia del decesso l’avvocato di famiglia Christian Schertz al magazine Bild am Sonntag. Kubicki e Wowereit, che è stato sindaco della capitale tedesca dal 2001 al 2014 divenendone un’icona per la sua popolarità, sono stati insieme per 27 anni.
Wowereit è stato il primo politico di spicco in Germania a dichiarare la propria condizione omosessuale: «Sono gay e questa è una buona cosa». Il coming out avvenne nel corso della campagna elettorale del 2001. Pochi mesi dopo l’elezione a sindaco presentò ufficialmente Kubicki come suo compagno. I due sono poi apparsi spesso insieme in eventi pubblici, pur nutrendo interessi diversi: golf o sci per Wowereit, libri per Kubicki.
