LIFE GAY Vermont takes step toward legalizing gay unions
MONTPELIER, Vt, March 1 (Reuters) A Vermont legislative committee on Wednesday Approved a far reaching proposal to legalise the relationshíps of gay couples.
The state’s House Judíciary Commíttee voted 10to1 for the “civil unions” ínitiative which would grant gay couples the same “rIghts and obligations” that are extended to married heterosexual couples.
Approval of the measure, which does not amount to gay marriage, followed two months of often emotional debate that attracted widespread attention.
The next big step is consideration by the full House. The Senate has not take up the measure yet.
No nation allows samesex marriage, but within the last 10 years several countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and France, have created a status called regiatered partnerships.
The Vermont Supreme Court, in an unprecedented decision, ruled in December that gays and lesbians were unfairly denied the rights and benefits of marriage in that state.
The court Ieft it up to the legislature to resolve the matter, providíng the option for a solution other than gay marriage.
California and Hawaii have limited domestic partnership measurea in place. Questo articolo ha ricevuto 161 visite.
